Once crafted, place the Smithing dog in your farm, and its passive lets the pet dig up a coal once every 12 minutes. The pet will dig up common coal more often than it does with higher-rarity coal. Although a small thing, you will have a constant income of coal in the long run.

3. Treasure Digging
The third way is a completely free method, but it relies on a random chance. Similar to the Gravedigging mechanic introduced in the last Halloween updates, we now have the treasure digging event. You can access this area by clicking on the Shop button on the left side of the screen.
Once a new screen opens up, showing a 5×5 square tiled area with flowers on top. All you need to do is dig every square to reveal what lies underneath. With every dig, your chances decrease, but you can have a small chance of getting coal through this event.
