All New Features of Minecraft 1.21.9 The Copper Age

Minecraft 1.21.9 introduces copper tools that mine faster and resist more damage from mobs. Players craft copper swords, pickaxes, and armor at the smithing table using copper ingots and existing templates. New copper golems patrol bases and repair oxidized blocks nearby. Copper bulbs now signal redstone circuits with light levels that adjust to oxidation stages. Spyglasses gain zoom toggles for precise aiming during raids.

The Copper Age name comes from the plethora of copper materials being added to the game in this update. Whether you are an explorer expecting new tools, a combat specialist wanting a brand new set of weapons and armor, or a builder wanting new blocks for decorating a base, there’s something for everyone. With that said, here is a list of new features in the Copper Age update:

  • Copper Tools and Armor
  • Shelf
  • Copper Decorations
  • Chat Drafts, and more

How to craft copper tools and armor in 1.21.9

Copper tools and armor in Minecraft 1.21.9 are crafted exactly like iron gear, just using copper ingots instead of iron.

Requirements

  • Smelt raw copper in a furnace or blast furnace to get copper ingots.

  • Have sticks (for tools) and a crafting table ready.

Copper tools recipes

All recipes are made in a 3×3 crafting grid using copper ingots + sticks, in the same shapes as other tool tiers.

  • Copper Pickaxe: 3 copper ingots in the top row, 2 sticks in the center of rows 2 and 3.

  • Copper Axe: 2 ingots in the top-left and top-middle, 1 ingot in middle-left, 2 sticks in the center of rows 2 and 3.

  • Copper Shovel: 1 ingot in the top-center, 2 sticks in the center of rows 2 and 3.

  • Copper Hoe: 2 ingots in the top row (top-middle and top-right), 2 sticks in the center of rows 2 and 3.

  • Copper Sword: 2 ingots stacked in the center of rows 1 and 2, 1 stick in the center of row 3.

Copper armor recipes

Armor uses only copper ingots and the same shapes as other armor types.

  • Copper Helmet: 5 ingots – fill the top row with 3 ingots, then put 1 ingot in the left and right of the middle row.

  • Copper Chestplate: 8 ingots – fill every slot except the very center slot.

  • Copper Leggings: 7 ingots – fill the first and third columns completely, plus the entire top row.

  • Copper Boots: 4 ingots – 2 ingots in bottom-left and middle-left, 2 ingots in bottom-right and middle-right.

If you tell what platform you play on (Java/Bedrock), a compact text “grid” layout for each recipe can be provided so you can match them visually in the crafting table.

What is the durability of copper tools and armor

Copper tools have 190 durability, and copper armor pieces sit between leather and iron in durability, with a full set lasting noticeably longer than leather but less than iron.

Tool durability

  • All copper tools (sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe) share the same base durability of 190 uses, compared to 131 for stone and 250 for iron.

  • This places copper clearly above stone but below iron in both durability and long-term usefulness.

Armor durability and slot values

  • Copper armor durability per piece follows the same multipliers as other armor types (helmet 11×, chestplate 16×, leggings 15×, boots 13× a material base), with copper’s base set between leather and iron.

  • Practically, a copper set lasts longer and takes more hits than leather but still wears out sooner than an iron set, while offering slightly lower protection than iron overall.
