From classic spotted cows grazing in plains to rare variants hiding in lush or frosty biomes, Minecraft’s bovine diversity offers more than just milk and leather – each cow type adds a unique touch to the game’s ecosystem and rewards for those who find them.

All Cow Variants in Minecraft
From the tame cows to the mysterious variants found across biomes, Minecraft’s cow lineup spans plain, brown, snowy, and red-eyed trait-bearing models, plus unique types like the Mooshroom in mushroom biomes and the terrifyingly armored, hostile variants lurking in special seeds.Each variant brings distinct textures, drops, or behaviors, adding flavor to farming, exploration, and combat alike, while biomes quietly shape where you’ll encounter them and what you’ll need to bring along on your trek.
The first thing you must carry with you before you start your adventure in the game is some Minecraft cow food. They don’t seem to have many preferences, and carrying a few stacks of wheat will simply do your task.
Furthermore, wheat can be used to breed cows in Minecraft. However, note that if you breed two different cow variants, the baby will randomly inherit any form from its parents. With that, let’s check out all the Minecraft cow variants and the biomes they spawn in:
1. Warm Cow
First up on our list are the Warm Cows, easily recognizable from their reddish-brown color due to the hot and humid climate where they get spawned. These bovines boast large upward-curving horns along with dark brown hooves.
Unlike the cold cow variants, they don’t seem to have fur on their skin and rather have a tanned appearance. The warm cow variants can be found in the following Minecraft biomes:
- Savanna
- Savanna Plateau
- Windswept Savanna
- Jungle
- Sparse Jungle
- Bamboo Jungle
- Eroded Badlands
- Wooded Badlands
- Badlands
2. Cold Cow
The second one on our list is the Cold Cow variant. As per its name, they are found in the chilly biomes, where you will find tall, dark trees covered in snow as well. Moreover, you will find the cold cow horns pointing straight in the forward direction and bigger than the regular variants. That said, here are the locations where you can find the cold cows in Minecraft:
- Old Growth Pine Taiga
- Old Growth Spruce Taiga

- Snowy Taiga
- Windswept Hills
- Windswept Gravely Hill
- Windswept Forest
3. Temperate Cow
Finally comes the temperate cow variant we are all familiar with and have been there from the beginning. The normal Minecraft cows are dark brown in color with several white patches on their bodies, along with the latest modification of their protruding snout.
They spawn in all other biomes where the warm and cold variants do not spawn except for the Snowy Plains, Meadows, Mangrove Swamps, and Wooded Badlands. That said, you will find them in the following locations:
- Forest
- Flower Forest
- Birch Forest
- Old Growth Birch Forest
- Dark Forest
- Swamp
What biomes spawn Temperate Cows specifically
Temperate Cows spawn exclusively in specific temperate biomes where neither Warm nor Cold variants appear. They represent the classic cow design with dark brown fur and white patches.​

Spawn Conditions
They require a light level of 7 or higher in Java Edition (herds of four) or 9 in Bedrock Edition (herds of two to three), with at least two blocks of space above grass. Offspring from breeding inherit variants randomly from parents, ignoring the local biome.​

Temperate Cows in Java Edition spawn as the default variant in grassy biomes not occupied by Warm or Cold Cows.​
