Minecraft Spear Enchantments Guide Top Picks for Enhanced Gameplay

Guides

A well-enchanted spear can turn an ordinary throw into a devastating strike. From storm-calling tridents to precision-boosting upgrades, these ten spear enchantments redefine combat power in Minecraft and give every player a sharper edge in battle.

Top Minecraft Spear Enchantments

Top Minecraft spear enchantments focus on boosting damage, reach, and utility so you can control fights more easily and survive tougher encounters. Prioritise enchantments that increase raw attack power, add elemental effects like fire or lightning-style abilities, and improve durability so your weapon lasts through long battles. Throwing-focused upgrades can turn a spear into a ranged weapon, while mobility and knockback enhancements help you manage crowds and keep dangerous mobs at a safe distance.

Having tested all the enchantments that work on the spear in Minecraft, we have made this ranked list, starting with the least efficient enchantments and going all the way to those that make the spear devastating. With that said, here are the best spear enchantments in Minecraft.

10. Curse of Vanishing and Curse of Binding

The Curse of Vanishing and the Curse of Binding are ranked the lowest in our list. They are useful only during the PvP modes in Minecraft and therefore don’t make sense to use during your single-player adventures.

While the Curse of Vanishing doesn’t drop the spear upon the player’s death, the Curse of Binding doesn’t allow the player to remove it from their hand. In terms of combat situations, both are of no use and further complicate things for the player.

9. Bane of Arthropods

When the Bane of Arthropods enchantment is applied to the spear, it will deal greater damage to arthropod mobs such as bees, spiders, cave spiders, endermites, and silverfish. This enchantment has a limited and specific use, since all other mobs will receive the standard damage per hit.

This enchantment is not compatible with Smite and Sharpness, which are far better options when dealing damage to other powerful hostile mobs in Minecraft.

8. Mending

The Mending enchantment is a rare one and might be really helpful for all other tools and weapons in Minecraft, but not for the spear. If you want to give your spear some special abilities, Mending is not the best choice for you.

In the latest Minecraft Snapshot 25W42A, Mending was made incompatible with Lunge, so you will have to choose either one. If you still want to go with Mending, do note that it will allow the spear to gain durability points on every kill.

This enchantment can be useful during endurance battles or at times when you won’t have the option to repair your weapon for a long time.

7. Knockback

The Knockback enchantment can give your spear the ability to push back your enemies to a certain distance. The spear already has an option to knockback enemies when you are hitting them with the charged attack.

However, not only do you deal knockback on Jab attacks with this enchantment, but the knockback distance on the charged attack is increased as well. Keep in mind that the knockback won’t work on Iron golems, squids, or the Warden due to their huge size.

6. Looting

Applying the Looting enchantment on your spear in Minecraft will help you get more items or drops once an enemy is killed. This is one of the most useful enchantments, because it reduces the effort to go for multiple enemies in order to get certain crafting materials.

For example, you could kill lesser Blazes to get more blaze rods, lesser Wither Skeletons for Wither Skeleton heads, Endermen for Ender Pearls, and so on.

5. Smite

The Smite enchantment on the spear allows you to harm undead mobs with greater damage per hit. This increases the damage dealt to mobs, including Zombies, Zombie Villagers, Skeletons, Withers, Wither Skeletons, Zombified Piglins, and more.

Although this enchantment has a specific use case against a group of mobs, applying Smite is a wiser choice than selecting Bane of Arthropods. However, this enchantment is again incompatible with Sharpness in Minecraft.

4. Unbreaking

Unbreaking is one of the best spear Minecraft enchantments because it can massively increase the durability of any tool or weapon. Applying Unbreaking 3 will increase its durability by 300%.

If you want your spear to have the exclusive lunging power, the Unbreaking enchantment is a must-have for your weapon.

3. Fire Aspect

Another unique choice of enchantments for your spear is the Fire Aspect. Attacking with a weapon that has the Fire Aspect enchant will set them on fire. It is quite useful for killing mobs as they will receive constant burning damage over time.

When paired up with the right enchantments that boost your spear’s damage output, you can take down enemies in only a couple of hits.

2. Sharpness

Coming down to the best two enchantments for your spear, we have Sharpness. Using this enchant increases its overall damage output. Unlike the previous ones, this enchantment increases the spear’s damage for all the mobs in the game.

You can pair this with Fire Aspect to inflict bonus damage to the enemies. But, this enchantment is incompatible with Bane of Arthropods and Smite, and well, looking at all the pros this has, you may not even consider applying the former ones.

1. Lunge

Finally, the exclusive Spear enchantment coming with the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update is called the Lunge enchantment. When it is applied to your spear, all your Jab attacks will propel you forward in the direction you’re facing.

However, one drawback of the Lunge enchantment is that with each Jab attack, your hunger points will decrease along with your food saturation. Since Mending can no longer be applied to the spear with Lunge enchantment, Unbreaking can help you keep the spear intact for longer durations.

How to craft a Minecraft spear

Craft a Minecraft spear using a crafting table with two sticks and one material matching block or ingot.

Crafting Recipe

Open a crafting table and arrange items diagonally:

  • Place one stick in the bottom-left slot.

  • Place another stick in the middle-center slot.

  • Position the material (e.g., wooden planks, cobblestone, iron ingot, gold ingot, copper ingot, or diamond) in the top-right slot.

This diagonal pattern yields one spear; vertical alignment crafts a shovel instead. Stone-tier spears use any stone block like cobblestone interchangeably.

Spear Tiers

Multiple material options provide varying damage and durability:

Tier Material Base Damage Notes
Wood Planks 1-2 Earliest craftable
Stone Cobblestone Better early damage
Copper Copper Ingot Mid-tier utility
Gold Gold Ingot 1-2 Fast attack speed
Iron Iron Ingot 3-4 Balanced mid-game
Diamond Diamond 4-5 High damage
Netherite Diamond Spear + Netherite Upgrade 4-5 Smithing table only; adds durability

Netherite Upgrade

Craft a diamond spear first, then use a smithing table with a netherite ingot and Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template for the final tier.

Repairing Spears

Combine two damaged spears of the same tier in a crafting table to merge durability, adding 5% extra.

How to use spear attacks jab and charge

Minecraft spears feature two primary attacks: jab and charge, each suited for different combat scenarios.

Jab Attack

Perform a jab by left-clicking with the spear equipped, delivering a quick melee strike with up to 4.5 blocks of reach but a 2-block minimum range. This attack includes a cooldown like other melee weapons and works best for finishing weakened foes or maintaining distance, especially with Knockback enchantment. Jabs can hit multiple mobs due to an inflated hitbox.

Charge Attack

Hold right-click (use key) to ready a charge attack, lowering the spear as damage scales with your velocity relative to the target-sprinting, jumping, riding mounts, or elytra gliding maximizes output. Release to strike; it progresses through Engaged (full effects), Tired (damage + knockback), and Disengaged (damage only) stages. Charge independently of jab cooldown, piercing groups and exploiting enemy movement toward you.

Tips for Effectiveness

Maintain 2-4.5 block range to avoid missing close targets; pair Lunge enchantment with jabs for speed boosts into charges. Use on foot by sprint-jumping or let mobs charge you while holding.
