The latest Genshin Impact trailer, “The Gods’ Limits,” hides more than cinematic spectacle – it hints at Asmoday’s cryptic motives, the ties between the Four Shades, and a forgotten law older than Celestia itself.
We decided to closely watch the trailer and discuss the most important points below. So, check out how the lore evolves in this complete God’s Limits Genshin Impact trailer breakdown.
1. Identity of the “Unknown God”
The trailer flashes an “Unknown God” with traits matching Asmoday, the self-proclaimed Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. Her golden armor, celestial motifs, and commanding presence align perfectly with the figure who sealed the Traveler at the game’s outset. Four Shades flank her in subtle frames-shadowy attendants hinting at her divine hierarchy. This reveal ties her directly to the Heavenly Principles, positioning her as the trailer’s core antagonist. Genshin lore frames her as the enforcer upholding Teyvat’s cosmic order against celestial threats.
The biggest reveal in the new trailer was the real identity of the “Unknown God” that appears in the opening cutscene of Genshin Impact. The “Unknown God” is none other than Asmoday, the Ruler of Space and one of the Four Shades of the Heavenly Principles.
She is responsible for separating the Twin Travelers and sending them into Teyvat. Asmoday might also be responsible for the False Sky in Genshin Impact.
2. Ruler of Space is Missing
A fleeting shot shows a celestial throne left vacant, hinting that the ruler once tied to space has either vanished or been dethroned. The surrounding constellations flicker erratically, suggesting an imbalance that could ripple across all domains. Fans suspect this absence connects to Asmoday’s cryptic line about “limits being redrawn,” implying a cosmic authority’s retreat or downfall preceding the events of the trailer.
Right after the Asmoday reveal, we learn that she has not been attending the Four Shades meeting. The scene further reveals that Asmoday is missing, even hinting that she may have switched sides.
Ronova, the Ruler of Death, also mentions Asmoday’s new master. Now, being a master of the Four Shades, while being outside of the Heavenly Principles, clearly points towards a being from the outer worlds.
3. Heavenly Principles are ‘Sleeping’
The phrase suggests that the divine order governing Teyvat lies dormant, hinting at a cosmic pause rather than a destroyed system. “Sleeping” implies that these principles still exist but are temporarily inactive, awaiting a trigger to awaken. This could symbolize a world caught between cycles of divine intervention and withdrawal, foreshadowing a shift in how Celestia’s authority manifests-or fails to. Each lingering trace of silence in the trailer deepens the sense that something ancient is merely resting, not gone.
Another shocking tidbit we learned from the God’s Limits teaser is that the Heavenly Principles are asleep. This was revealed by the ‘Gold’ Rhinedottir when she implies that now would be the perfect time to act for Asmoday as the ‘Heavenly Principles are yet to awaken’, possibly hinting at mischief.
The word ‘yet’ also implies that the Heavenly Principles are expected to awaken at a designated time. Their ‘sleep’ can be the reason behind the creation of the Four Shades to govern Teyvat.
4. Rhinedottir Devoured Naberius
Rhinedottir’s act of devouring Naberius hints at a grim phase in her alchemical experiments, possibly marking the moment she transcended ordinary human limits. The gesture isn’t just literal consumption but a symbolic absorption of his essence, merging their knowledge and wills into one. This echoes the story of the Primordial Alchemist’s pursuit to create life at any cost, showing how Rhinedottir’s methods blurred the boundary between creation and destruction. Naberius’s “devouring” may have been the price of wisdom-or the birth of something far darker.
We finally got our first look at Rhinedottir, the infamous Alchemist who was partly responsible for the Cataclysm 500 years ago.
Rhinedottir is one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri’ah and the person who created Durin and Albedo in Genshin Impact. Rhinedottir has somehow managed to devour Naberius, the Ruler of Life, and has, in turn, become one of the Four Shades herself. Both Naberius and Rhinedottir seem to exist in the same body, but Rhinedottir is shown to be in control at the moment.

5. Pierro is a Khaenri’ahn Noble
Pierro’s depiction as a noble from Khaenri’ah surfaces in the trailer’s subtle visual cues, including his ornate attire echoing pre-cataclysm designs and a faint emblem tied to the kingdom’s fallen aristocracy. This aligns with leaks confirming his highborn status amid the nation’s alchemist elite, positioning him as a survivor who ascended to Harbinger leadership. The nod reinforces Khaenri’ah’s stratified society, where nobles wielded influence before the gods’ wrath.
The teaser also gives another look at the Director of the Fatui, “The Jester” Pierro. Shockingly, we see Pierro being in the presence of Ronova when she placed the Curse of Immortality on Khaen’riah. This also means that Pierro was present at Khaen’riah during the Cataclysm and is likely a Khaenri’ahn Noble himself.
It isn’t a far stretch, as Il Capitano was also revealed to be a Commander of Khaen’riah. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that Pierro is either Hroptatyr “The Wise,” the Knight Marshal Anfortas, or the King Irmin himself. Pierro must have higher authority in Khaenri’ah compared to Il Capitano.
6. Tsaritsa’s Plans Revealed
The trailer hints that the Tsaritsa’s ambitions extend far beyond Snezhnaya’s borders. Her presence is woven into brief flashes of Fatui operatives, a glimpse of Cryo sigils, and cryptic dialogues about control over divine authority. These visuals suggest she’s accelerating her mission against Celestia, using the loss of other Archons as leverage for her cause. The tone of these moments feels colder and more deliberate than before, implying that her long-laid strategy is nearing a decisive stage.
During the Four Shades meeting, Ronova scoffs at the Cryo Archon Tsaritsa for having ambitions of overthrowing the Heavenly Principles. Till now, we have only speculated the reason behind the Fatui’s pursuit of the Gnosis, but now we finally know about it. The Gnosis is likely the only way the Tsaritsa can tackle the Heavenly Principle.
7. Fatui’s Plan in Nod-Krai
The “Gods’ Limits” trailer closes with Fatui soldiers citing the Palestar Edict, ordering them to secure The Damselette from Nod-Krai at any cost. This ties into Il Dottore’s stronghold there, where past experiments with abyssal energy in an apocalypse bunker left dangerous legacies like transformed personnel. Nod-Krai’s Fatui presence, including Oprichniki using local kuuvahki tech and a Northland Bank branch, signals broader schemes against heavenly principles amid the region’s moon sister ties.
At the end of the God’s Limits teaser, we learn about the Fatui’s plans for Nod-Krai. One of the Fatui soldiers mentions the following order: “Per the Palestar Edict, we are to retrieve The Damselette from Nod-Krai, whatever it takes.”
This ‘Damselette’ is protected by the Frostmoon Scions and is likely connected to the unique moon worship powers. The soldiers also mention that they have to make sure the Frostmoon Scions don’t pose a threat. It is clear that the Frostmoon Scions will take the center stage in the upcoming Nod-Krai region.
Who is Ronova the Ruler of Death
Ronova serves as the Ruler of Death, one of the Four Shades enforcing the Heavenly Principles in Genshin Impact. She governs Teyvat’s laws of death, defining how entities perish or even denying death, as seen in her curse of immortality on Khaenri’ahns during the Cataclysm. Her actions often stir conflict with higher powers.
Role in Natlan
Ronova established Natlan’s rules and guided Yohualtecuhtin in forming the Night Kingdom to counter the Abyss and repair Ley Lines after the War of Funerary Flame. This overreach drew censure from the Heavenly Principles, leading her to grow indifferent. Her power fueled Mavuika’s stand against the Abyss, revealing the fake sky, but at the cost of accepting death herself.
Key Interactions
During Khaenri’ah’s fall, Ronova cursed pure-blooded residents indiscriminately, crossing paths with Pierro’s gaze. In recent events, Capitano sacrificed himself to her in Mavuika’s place atop Ochkanatlan, stabilizing Natlan’s Ley Lines and granting the Lord of Night immortality. She appears in “The Gods’ Limits” trailer mocking Tsaritsa’s ambitions.
What powers does Ronova have as Ruler of Death
Ronova, as the Ruler of Death and one of the Four Shades of the Heavenly Principles in Genshin Impact, wields absolute authority over death’s essence across Teyvat. Her powers allow her to manipulate the laws of mortality for any entity.
Core Powers
Ronova defines how death manifests, including altering its form or denying it entirely, as demonstrated by her curse of immortality on pure-blooded Khaenri’ahns during the Cataclysm. She observes Teyvat through a crimson rift manifesting six eyes, channeling her death energy. This control enforces rules so ingrained that breaking them risks paradoxes, such as when Capitano challenged her with his immortal curse.
Natlan Applications
In Natlan, Ronova empowered the Night Kingdom’s creation and Yohualtecuhtin’s forces against the Abyss by restructuring Ley Lines. She lent Mavuika the Ode of Resurrection, a one-time power reviving the fallen, but at the cost of the wielder’s own acceptance of death. Her involvement highlights death’s price: users must conquer its fear or face mass casualties.
